CAIRO – 30 January 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, discussed strengthening the Egypt-EU strategic partnership and regional tensions during a phone call.
Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the call focused on building upon the first Egyptian-European Summit held in Brussels last October. Both officials commended the progress in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to implementing memoranda of understanding to attract European investment and facilitate Egyptian exports.
The conversation addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip, with Abdelatty emphasizing the need for international efforts to implement the second phase of the U.S.-backed ceasefire plan. He advocated for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza to manage daily affairs as a transitional body, paving the way for the Palestinian Authority to resume its responsibilities. He also stressed the importance of deploying an international stabilization force to monitor a ceasefire and humanitarian aid flow.
On the conflict in Sudan, Abdelatty briefed Kallas on Egypt's efforts within the Quartet mechanism. He called for a humanitarian truce as a precursor to a comprehensive ceasefire and a Sudanese-owned political process. He reiterated Egypt’s support for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Abdelatty also highlighted the importance of de-escalating regional tensions to prevent instability, specifically calling for conditions that would allow for a resumption of dialogue between the United States and Iran regarding the nuclear issue.
Kallas commended Egypt's role in supporting regional security, describing the country as a key partner for the European Union.
