CAIRO - 26 January 2026: Some Egyptian fishermen were caught while hunting whale sharks, one of the peaceful and endangered marine species, using a brutal and inhumane method, which sparked widespread anger and resentment among marine life advocates and social media users.

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of the Environment, directed the immediate investigation of the incident in coordination with the relevant authorities and the taking of all necessary legal measures.

This came within the framework of the Ministry of Environment’s monitoring of a video circulated on social media showing the hunting of a rare whale shark and its brutal treatment.

Dr. Manal Awad announced the success of the concerned executive agencies responsible for coastal protection, in cooperation with the Nature Protection Sector at the Ministry of Environment.

Dr. Manal Awad confirmed that the fishermen have been arrested and will be referred to the competent legal authorities once their involvement in capturing a rare and endangered marine species is established.

This action comes as part of ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity and preserve marine life in Egypt.

The Ministry of Environment stressed the importance of community participation and urges citizens to report any practices that threaten rare marine creatures via WhatsApp at 01222693333, contributing to the protection of biodiversity and the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.
