BRUSSELS – 25 January 2026: Belgium has introduced new restrictions barring aircraft transporting weapons or military equipment bound for Israel from flying over or stopping on Belgian territory, the country’s foreign ministry confirmed.

The measure applies even when military cargo is not unloaded during stopovers and specifically covers equipment destined for the Israeli armed forces.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the decision reflects the country’s responsibility to avoid contributing to the conflict.

Prévot stressed that Belgium is acting in line with its obligations under international law and aims to send a clear political message at both the European and international levels.

The move comes months after a ceasefire took effect in Gaza in October after Israeli strikes had killed more than 70,000, wounded over 171,000 others, and damaged or destroyed over 90 percent of buildings over two years.

Israel has continued near-daily violations of the ceasefire, killing more than 480 people and wounding hundreds of others since it started, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Belgium’s move aligns it with a growing group of countries that have introduced full or partial curbs on arms transfers to Israel since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023.

Among the most far-reaching measures, Slovenia became the first EU country to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, while Spain has suspended weapons exports and imports linked to the conflict.
