CAIRO – 16 January 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received phone calls Thursday evening from Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, and Constantinos Kombos, the foreign minister of Cyprus.

The discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU following the Egyptian-European Summit held in Brussels in 2025. Officials highlighted progress in political, economic, and security relations, emphasizing a commitment to ongoing consultation on shared interests.

The calls addressed several Middle East crises, including tensions involving Iran. The officials emphasized the need for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions, noting that there are no military remedies for the region's instability.

On the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty and the European officials discussed the deteriorating situation in the West Bank caused by settlement expansion and settler violence. They also exchanged views on the transition to the second phase of President Donald Trump's regional plan for the Gaza Strip.

The parties reached a consensus on implementing the requirements for a Gaza ceasefire agreement. These include the start of the Palestinian technocratic committee’s work, the deployment of an international stabilization force, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the commencement of reconstruction efforts.

The European officials praised Egypt’s role as a pillar of regional stability and its efforts to consolidate a ceasefire in Gaza.
