CAIRO – 2 January 2026: Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs Haddad el Gohary said the coming period will see the release of several hundred Egyptian nationals from prisons in Libya, adding that procedures are under way to finalize their release, resolve their legal status and repatriate them to Egypt.

He made the remarks during a meeting with more than 200 families of Egyptians reported missing in Libya, stressing that the Egyptian consulate in Benghazi and the embassy in Tripoli are closely following up on all missing-person reports across Libyan detention facilities.

El Gohary said efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates resulted in the repatriation in 2025 of more than 3,000 Egyptians in Libya charged in illegal migration cases, the release of over 1,200 Egyptians from Libyan prisons, and the repatriation of more than 300 bodies at the state’s expense following the sinking of migrant boats off the Libyan coast.

He urged families of the missing to obtain information through official channels and not to respond to unknown individuals or entities who exploit them for money in exchange for false claims about the whereabouts of their relatives.

He also called on families to take legal action against smugglers, traffickers and illegal migration networks that endanger lives and extort large sums from families to send their children to Europe via irregular migration through neighboring countries, stressing the need to respect entry rules of neighboring states through official visas and certified work contracts to protect the rights and lives of Egyptian citizens
