CAIRO – 21 November 2025: A newly introduced compact vehicle—approved by Giza Governorate as an official replacement for traditional tuk-tuks—has drawn wide public attention, as residents have long awaited a safer and more organized alternative to the chaos and traffic violations commonly associated with tuk-tuks across villages and major streets.
Giza Governor Adel Al-Nagar confirmed that the governorate has begun implementing a phased plan to replace tuk-tuks with modern, small-sized vehicles as part of an upgraded transport system aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing the quality of public services.
The new vehicle is designed as a practical and affordable urban transport option. It is compact enough to navigate narrow streets and operates on both natural gas and petrol. It can travel up to 550 kilometers on a single tank, offering high efficiency for daily transport needs. The vehicle will also be officially licensed as a taxi through the General Directorate of Traffic.
As part of the new system, each district and city within the governorate will have a unified vehicle color, making it easier for passengers and authorities to identify vehicles operating under the regulated framework. A fixed fare structure will also be implemented to ensure transparency and prevent random pricing.
The governorate has announced several incentives for drivers who wish to join the new transport model. These include financing programs and flexible payment facilities designed to encourage current tuk-tuk owners and new applicants to transition smoothly to the upgraded, more organized system.
With this initiative, Giza aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and introduce a modern transport alternative that aligns with the governorate’s long-term urban development plans.
