UN 80th anniversary: Egypt renews call for reform to redress historical injustice against Africa, developing nations

CAIRO – 24 October 2025: On the 80th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945, Egypt reaffirmed the adoption of a comprehensive vision for reforming the UN, aimed at correcting the historical injustice faced by Africa and developing nations.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, Egypt called for the reform and expansion of the UN Security Council.

Egypt also reiterated its full support for the Common African Position, as espoused in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.

The ministry underscored Egypt’s unwavering support for the UN, its specialized agencies, and multilateral action. The statement underscored the importance of defending the UN Charter and its lofty principles, which seek to achieve international peace, security, and sustainable development.

Egypt stressed the need to preserve and enhance the effectiveness of multilateralism as a cornerstone of stable international relations, grounded in respect for international law and a rules-based global order, contributing to collective peace, security, coexistence, and tolerance among peoples.

The country confirmed its continued efforts to promote regional and international peace and security, guided by UN principles, including respect for international law, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and strengthened multilateral cooperation to confront common joint challenges.

Egypt’s Major Contributions to UN

As a founding member of the United Nations, Egypt has played a pivotal role in supporting the organization and its principles, the ministry stressed.

The country has become a major contributor and active partner in multilateral work, hosting 38 UN offices staffed by more than 2,300 personnel, making it one of the UN’s main regional hubs.

Egypt is also one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, ranking 7th globally in military experts and 13th in uniformed personnel deployed.

The Egyptian contingent currently includes 1,199 personnel, nearly 10% of them women, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to supporting peacekeeping.

Egypt has served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council six times, playing a key role in international peace and security, particularly regarding Africa and the Arab region, the statement read.

During its most recent term (2016–2017), Egypt focused on supporting political settlements of conflicts, significantly backed terrorism and extremism countering efforts, and contributed to addressing humanitarian crises in many areas worldwide.

Reforming UN

Highlighting the UN’s central role in global peace, security, and development, Egypt stressed the importance of reforming the UN to adapt to international developments.

The country called on the international community to unite in supporting the UN and reforming its working mechanisms and institutions to meet the aspirations of peoples for peace, security, stability, and sustainable development.
