CAIRO - 18 October 2025: Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly witnessed Wednesday, at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the Emirati company K&K Investment to implement the final studies for the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Europe via Italy, using submarine cables.
The agreement was attended by Engineer Mahmoud Esmat, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
The signing of the agreement comes within the framework of the strategy to strengthen Egypt's position as a regional energy hub, support efforts to export clean energy to European markets, and expand electricity interconnection projects with neighboring countries, particularly with Europe.
This aims to transform Egypt into a pivotal hub for energy transfer and exchange between Africa, Asia, and Europe.
The agreement was signed by Engineer Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and Dr. Tag El-Din Mustafa Seif, representing the Emirati company K&K Investment.
The agreement includes the preparation and implementation of the final technical, environmental, and financial studies for the project, and the necessary measures to begin implementation and the electrical interconnection between Egypt's national electricity grid and the European unified electricity grid via the Italian electricity grid.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the signing of this agreement reflects the state's interest in electrical interconnection with the European continent and maximizing the use of natural resources, especially renewable energy sources. It also represents a step towards strengthening Egypt's position as a regional energy hub.
The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy indicated that the electrical interconnection with Europe is a strategic project for exporting surplus renewable energy produced in Egypt to the European continent, with a targeted capacity of up to 3,000 megawatts. This will contribute to supporting energy transition efforts, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing regional and international energy security.
Engineer Mahmoud Esmat explained the critical importance the electricity and renewable energy sector places on promoting the use of renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and diversifying energy sources. He pointed to the state's strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Minister added, "The private sector is a key partner in renewable energy projects," noting that the project reflects the growing confidence in Egypt's technical and human capabilities and the attractive investment environment provided by the electricity and renewable energy sector.
