5 school children killed after tricycle overturns in Upper Egypt canal; Driver detained pending investigation

CAIRO – 15 October 2025: A deep sense of grief has gripped the Upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut after five children lost their lives when a motorized tricycle carrying them to school overturned into a water canal.

The victims were heading to the school in the village of Manqabad when the incident occurred.

Civil protection teams and people spent hours searching the waterway before recovering the missing children’s bodies.

 

Eight pupils were also injured and were taken to Assiut University Hospitals, where they are receiving treatment under close medical supervision.

The Public Prosecution in Assiut has ordered the detention of the tricycle driver for four days pending investigation.

Assiut Governor Hisham Abu Al-Nasr on Wednesday visited the injured children to check on their condition and ensure they are receiving the necessary medical care.

The governor also offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives in the accident.
