CAIRO – 28 July 2017: Alexandria will receive the first new tram from Ukraine in December, to be the first air-conditioned tram equipped with Internet in Egypt, the head of Public Transport Authority in Alexandria, General Khalid Elewa stated on Friday.

Elewa stated that Egypt signed a contract with the Ukraine in February to import 15 air-conditioned trams, worth $17 million. He added that the new trams are each equipped with internet connection and holds a capacity of 140 passengers.

The new trams will contribute in solving the problems of environmental pollution and severe traffic in the city, Elewa said

On July 18, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi discussed plans with Chinese companies to develop an electric tram system.

This comes as part of the Ministry of Transportation’s plan to develop railway networks across the entire country. The project is stated to reduce congestion and save energy.
