CAIRO – 3 October 2025: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will travel to on 1-2 November, during which he will join the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The museum, located near the Giza Pyramids, is one of the largest archaeological museums in the world, housing more than 100,000 artifacts. For the first time, it will display the priceless complete collection of Tutankhamun.

Steinmeier’s visit also includes bilateral talks with President Sisi on regional developments and areas of cooperation between Germany and Egypt. It marks the German leader’s second trip to Egypt, following his 2024 visit.

The German president is traveling with his wife, Elke Büdenbender, and a business delegation. Egypt is the first stop of a wider African tour that will also take him to Ghana and Angola.

GEM Opening

Egypt is gearing up for the grand opening of GEM, set to become the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated for one civilization, on 1 November.

Cairo has invited world leaders and public figures to attend the opening, which is set to feature a range of accompanying cultural and artistic events.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized that the inauguration is being planned as a landmark international event, highlighting its importance as one of Egypt’s most prestigious national milestones in recent history.

The museum is among the largest and most modern museums globally, covering an expansive 500,000 square meters and housing an extensive collection of artifacts.

Many of these rare and unique archaeological finds have never been publicly displayed before, making GEM a significant addition to the global cultural landscape.
