CAIRO - 29 September 2025: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sweilem participated in the 14th Ordinary Session of the General Assembly of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), held Monday, in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

Sweilem stated that Egypt's participation in this important event stems from Egypt's commitment to building on the successes of AMCOW during Egypt's presidency of AMCOW (2023-2025), with the aim of achieving further accomplishments in addressing water issues in Africa.

He added that this session is being held at a time when the African continent is facing the impacts of climate change and its associated floods, droughts, and hurricanes, more than ever before, affecting tens of thousands of citizens across the continent and the water services and infrastructure provided to them.

He highlighted Egypt's efforts over the past years to raise the status of water globally, as well as its call for the provision of necessary funding for the water sector in African countries.

He added that despite previous efforts, there is an urgent need to take further action to achieve the African Union's Agenda 2063. This includes enhancing the delivery of water and sanitation to African peoples, adopting climate-resilient planning, improving water management, and strengthening the capacity of member states in data management and information exchange.

Preceding the General Assembly, a consultative meeting was held between Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Dr. Cheikh Tidjane Gaye, Minister of Water and Sanitation of the Republic of Senegal (the host country). The meeting discussed several topics of common interest and measures to support the activities of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCAW) to serve African countries.
