CAIRO – 8 September 2025: Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Monday that he will increase pressure on Israel by banning Israel-bound ships and aircraft carrying weapons and transporting fuel from calling at Spanish ports or entering Spanish airspace.
He also said that Spain will increase aid to the Palestinian authority and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by €10 million ($11.7 million) and commit €150 million in additional humanitarian aid for Gaza in 2026.
Madrid will also impose an embargo on goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a televised speech, the Spanish PM explained that these measures aimed at stopping “the genocide in Gaza, pursue its perpetrators and support the Palestinian population.”
“What Israel is doing is not defending itself, it is exterminating a defenseless population,” Sanchez said. He added: “We hope that (the measures) will serve to add pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government to alleviate some of the suffering that the Palestinian population is enduring.”
Spain will also ban anyone who has participated directly in what Sanchez qualified as “genocide” from entering the country.
“We know these measures will not be enough to put an end to the war crimes, but we hope they serve to apply pressure to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people,” said Sanchez. “Spain alone cannot stop the war, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.”
Since the resumption of the Israeli genocidal war after a two-month truce on March 2025, the death toll has reached 11,911 martyrs while the number of the injures rose to 50,735 people.
As for those who being killed by Israeli occupation forces at the aid distribution centers, 31 people were killed and 132 others were injured over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of victims who arrived at hospitals to 2,416 martyrs and more than 17,709 injured since May 27, 2025.
Since Saturday, Israeli occupation forces have ordered the Palestinians in the Gaza City to go to the south, threatening them that they would be bombed or if they do not evacuate to what Israel calls a “humanitarian zone” in the Al-Mawasi area, which constitutes only 3 percent of the Gaza Strip.
However, the Euro-Med Monitor said that the Israeli-declared area as a “humanitarian zone” is mere propaganda, contradicted by repeated military attacks in violation of international law and by the catastrophic conditions facing hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced people there.”
“The Israeli army’s claim on Saturday, 6 September, that better humanitarian services would be provided in Al-Mawasi runs counter to the reality faced by displaced people there. The area lacks the infrastructure to accommodate the large numbers forced into it through hundreds of evacuation orders, after the army destroyed most buildings and homes in Rafah and Khan Yunis, erasing them completely,” it added.
