CAIRO – 6 September 2025: This Sunday evening, Egypt’s night sky is set to host a total lunar eclipse that visitors can enjoy staring at with nothing more than your own two eyes and a clear view of the moon.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth slips perfectly between the sun and the moon, casting a deep shadow that gradually darkens and completely covers the moon’s face.

On Sunday night, a total lunar eclipse will occur, creating a captivating red “blood moon,” visible from across Egypt, the Arab world, and much of the globe.

In total, the entire eclipse spans 5 hours and 27 minutes, with the totality phase lasting 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Areas where the eclipse can be watched

The moon will rise normally bright and full. As it enters Earth's shadow, viewers will notice a dark shading starting to move across its surface (partial eclipse). This happens around 7:27 PM Cairo time.

Cairo will witness the total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7, 2025, with totality lasting from 8:30 PM to 9:52 PM, local time.

Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is perfectly safe to watch with the naked eye. You do not need special glasses but binoculars or a small telescope will enhance the view.

This eclipse will also be visible across Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Western North America, Eastern South America, and parts of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Arctic and Antarctica.

Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments has announced that Khusuf (eclipse) prayers will be held on the evening of Sunday at major mosques across the country.

The prayers are being organized to revive the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad in responding to celestial events.
