CAIRO – 29 August 2025: Turkey announced on Friday officially ending all economic and trade relations with Israel and has barred Israeli aircraft from entering Turkish airspace.
“We have completely cut off our trade with Israel. We do not allow Turkish ships to go to Israeli ports, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told a special parliamentary debate on Gaza in Ankara, according to the Associated Press.
“We do not allow their planes to enter our airspace,” he added.
The development comes while Turkey has taken measures against Israel over the war in Gaza, which has persisted for nearly two years and killed more than 63,000 people, according to the tally of the enclave’s health ministry.
In May 2024, Turkey had already suspended direct trade with Israel, citing demands for a lasting ceasefire and urgent humanitarian access to Gaza.
Trade between the two countries reached $7 billion in 2023, according to reports.
This is not the first instance of Turkey restricting Israeli access to its airspace. In November 2023, Turkish authorities denied Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s aircraft entry into Turkish airspace en route to a summit in Azerbaijan.
