CAIRO – 28 August 2025: A major overnight drone and missile attack by Russian forces on Kyiv has left 10 people dead, including a child, and 38 injured, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attack, which struck residential areas across several districts, sparked fires and widespread destruction, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, which comes amid intensified efforts by the United States to bring the war to end.

“Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table,” Zelenskyy stated on his X account, calling for “tough sanctions against Russia for everything it is doing.”

The Ukrainian president urged “a response from everyone in the world who has called for peace but now more often stays silent rather than taking principled positions.”

He blamed Russia for ruining “dozens of opportunities for diplomacy.”

The Ukrainian air force reported intercepting most of the incoming weapons, downing 563 of 598 drones and 26 of 31 missiles launched in a broad offensive across the country, Reuters reported.

Despite recent diplomatic outreach by the US and Europe, including attempts to arrange direct talks between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, progress toward peace remains stalled.
