CAIRO – 27 August 2025: The Egyptian Medical Syndicate decided on Wednesday to summon the doctor who performed a sleeve gastrectomy operation on a 9-year-old girl for investigation.
The incident sparked widespread controversy after a video circulated on social media showing the girl being prepared for surgery.
Deputy Director of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate and Head of the Investigation Committee, Gamal Emira, said in statements that the doctor overseeing the operation will be summoned for investigation next Sunday.
He confirmed that a scientific committee of specialized professors will be formed to determine the legality of this surgical intervention at this age.
A video of a girl called Rawan being prepared for a sleeve gastrectomy surgery was published by the doctor’s social media pages as a ‘propaganda material’ for his medical services. However, the video was widely slammed by social media users who criticized performing such an operation for a 9-year-old-child. The video was removed shortly after.
