CAIRO – 17 August 2025: Suez Canal Chairman (SCA) Admiral Osama Rabie honored Captain Walaa Hafez for breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest underwater dive carried out by a quadriplegic . Hafez stayed for more than 6 hours at the depth of 5 meters, according to a statement issued by the SCA on Sunday.
Hafez was handed over the Suez Canal Shield. The dive was carried out under the supervision of a medical team at the international pool of the Suez Canal Authority in Ismailia governorate, the statement added.
The ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Ashraf Atwa, SCA vice chairman, and several members of the authority. The ceremony was held at the Guidance Building in Ismailia Governorate, the statement continued.
During the meeting, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie emphasized the authority's commitment to hosting sports events and initiatives and providing all the necessary support to nurture various sports champions as part of the authority's community-based role in the Canal Cities (Suez, Port Said, and Ismailia).
The authority chairman voiced his pride and appreciation for Captain Walaa Hafez's accomplishments, and his admiration of the inspiring image he presented, which reflects strong willingness and determination.
Rabie also stated that the commitment of the Canal’s club to sponsoring sports activities for people of determination (in an indication to individuals with disabilities), highlighting the the launch of new table tennis program by the club.
For his part, Captain Walaa Hafez thanked the Suez Canal Authority for supporting the event, facilitating the necessary procedures to host it, and providing the training and sponsorship necessary for its success.
Captain Hafez noted that his setting of a new Guinness World Record will be an incentive to hold many more events to promote Egypt's image. He is currently preparing to hold a sporting event in Sharm El-Sheikh in December 2025.
