CAIRO – 11 August 2025: The Cabinet's Media Center published several infographics on its social media platforms, highlighting Egypt's selection among seven countries to benefit from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) program.
This selection is a direct result of the tangible efforts and serious steps the state is taking to transition toward a green economy. This development is a testament to the state's push to enhance the green economy, expand the use of clean energy, and implement environmentally friendly development projects.
It reflects Egypt's commitment to global standards for sustainable development and boosts its chances of securing international climate finance.
Egypt's Global Rankings Soar in Green Economy Metrics
The infographics showcased the international recognition of Egypt's efforts toward a green economy, with notable improvements in several key indices. The Climate Change Performance Index (Germanwatch) saw Egypt jump 6 places to rank 20th in 2025, up from 26th in 2014.
The Environmental Performance Index (Yale University) score increased by 4.5 points, reaching 43.7 in 2024 compared to 39.2 in 2014. The Energy Transition Index (World Economic Forum) saw Egypt advance 5 places to 74th in 2025, compared to 79th in 2015. Finally, in the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (Ernst & Young), the nation moved up 5 places to 34th in June 2024, from 39th in March 2015.
Strategic Frameworks for Sustainable Transition
The infographics also highlighted the foundational and strategic frameworks supporting this transition, including the re-establishment of the National Council for Climate Change in 2019, now chaired by the Prime Minister. This was followed by the launch of the National Climate Change Strategy 2050 in 2022. Egypt also launched the Sustainable Energy Strategy 2040, aiming to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 30% by 2030 and 60% by 2040.
In 2024, the National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy was introduced to diversify clean energy sources and reduce carbon emissions. A roadmap for carbon emissions reduction in several industrial sectors was completed in 2024, and the country's first law on waste management was issued in 2020.
Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Projects Underway
In the shift toward renewable energy and localizing the green hydrogen industry, the infographics revealed: Total installed renewable energy capacity (solar, hydro, wind) has reached 8,100 megawatts. 42.9 thousand km² have been allocated for renewable energy projects and the production of green hydrogen.
Major projects include the Benban Solar Park (1,465 MW) and the Gabal El-Zeit wind farm (580 MW). 16 Memoranda of Understanding and 7 binding framework agreements have been signed with global developers for green fuel projects.
Soaring Green Investments and Transport Initiatives
The infographics demonstrated a significant increase in green public investments, which soared from 15% in 2020/2021 to 55% of total public investments in 2025/2026. Additionally, Egypt was the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to issue green bonds on global markets, valued at $750 million. The country also launched its first voluntary carbon market in 2024 and was selected for a $1 billion grant from the CIF program to reduce industrial sector emissions.
Efforts toward eco-friendly transportation were also highlighted. The High-Speed Electric Train project's cost is EGP 1.2 trillion. The first two phases of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) cost EGP 84.9 billion. The East and West Nile monorails cost 1.6 billion and 1.1 billion Euros, respectively. 601,000 cars have been converted to run on natural gas by the end of June 2025. The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) began a pilot run for the public on June 1, 2025.
Emissions Reduction and Monitoring Efforts
The infographics showed that efforts to monitor and reduce air pollutants are yielding results. Solid particulate pollution in Greater Cairo and the Delta decreased by 35% to 102 micrograms/m³ in 2024, down from 157 in 2015. 1.5 million trees have been planted in the first two years of the "100 Million Trees" presidential initiative.
More than 334 thousand tons of emissions were avoided in 2024 from combating the "Black Cloud" phenomenon. The country now has 121 air pollution monitoring stations and 95 industrial facilities linked to the national emissions network. 1,012 exhaust inspection campaigns were conducted on over 41.8 thousand vehicles in 2024.
