CAIRO – 9 August 2025: Egypt welcomed the announcement of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, commending the mediation efforts undertaken by the United States, under President Donald Trump, in facilitating the deal.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Egypt’s hope that such constructive US mediation efforts would extend to the Middle East, contributing to the advancement of peace and stability across the region.

Egypt has repeatedly urged the United States to help end the war in Gaza, which has persisted for nearly two years and has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians—both from Israeli strikes and from starvation caused by Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid.

In late July, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called on former President Donald Trump to use his political influence to help end the tragedy and facilitate the entry of desperately needed aid into the besieged enclave.

Meanwhile, Israel is preparing to expand its military operations by taking control of Gaza City in the north, potentially displacing nearly one million residents and asserting full security control over the entire Strip—an escalation that threatens to deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Washington recently withdrew from mediation efforts in the latest round of ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel, leaving the fate of an urgently-needed truce uncertain.

Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace

In the foreign ministry statement today, Cairo reaffirmed its full support for regional and international efforts aimed at resolving conflicts through peaceful and diplomatic means.

The statement called for upholding the principles of good neighborliness, and promoting dialogue as the cornerstone of preserving international peace and security.

Egypt hopes the agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan will open new horizons for constructive cooperation between the two countries and help consolidate the foundations of peace, security, and stability in the South Caucasus region, the statement read.

It expressed aspiration for the deal to ultimately serve the interests of the peoples of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the region as a whole, while also enhancing prospects for regional development and prosperity.

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Friday signed a US-brokered peace agreement during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

The agreement, if persists, would end nearly four decades of conflict over control of Nagorno-Karabakh region located in southwestern Azerbaijan.

The region, though situated within Azerbaijan, was predominantly populated by ethnic Armenians during the Soviet era.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought multiple bloody clashes over its control, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths over the decades amidst repeated but unsuccessful international mediation efforts.

The deal also includes the creation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity through southern Armenia, connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave, which are separated by a strip of Armenian territory.

“Thirty-five years they fought, and now they're friends and they're going to be friends a long time,” Trump said at the signing ceremony at the White House.
