Egypt develops housing program for original tenants who will give up ‘old rent’ apartments

CAIRO - 10 July 2025: The Minister of Housing will develop a special program within the Social Housing Fund to provide alternative units to original tenants whose “old rent” will come to an end in seven years, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Wednesday.

In a Cabinet meeting, Madbouly said the units will come under various tenure types, ranging from rental to mortgage financing.

"A country that has successfully implemented the best housing programs in the world is capable of addressing the issue of tenants before the end of the seven-year period,” the prime minister added. 

The amendments to the old rent law will deprive tenants of apartments whose rent has not increased for decades as per the original contract, resulting in a place almost free of charge that they inherited from grandparents, the original tenants. 
 

People living in these apartments have a grace period id seven years to evacuate, returning the units to the grandchildren of the owners.
