CAIRO – 6 July 2025: The Egyptian government has announced a 150% increase in personal accident insurance coverage for citizens living abroad and their families, reaching LE 250,000 up from LE 100,000 in terms of death and complete disability, effective from July.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Financial Regulatory Authority, said the authority in a statement on Sunday.
It aims to make the personal accident insurance policy for expats and their families more inclusive and tailored to the needs of a wider variety of citizens.
The policy is optional, the statement explains, and is managed by the Egyptian Pool for Travel Insurance.
According to the approved provisions of the document published in the Official Gazette, Egyptians working abroad and their families, even those without work permits, can enroll in the current policy through the insurance pool’s website, mobile app, and WhatsApp.
The upgrade in the policy aims to facilitate access to insurance services and increase coverage rates, providing greater financial protection in cases of natural death, accidents, or total permanent disability resulting from an incident while abroad.
In cases of natural death, the insurance pool will cover the actual cost of repatriating the body, up to a maximum of LE 250,000.
For burials abroad, the pool is obligated to pay the equivalent of the cost of transporting the body from the country where the death occurred to Egypt, based on actual compensation paid for the transportation in the same year. This includes the preparation, shipping, and transportation of the body.
In the event of death due to an accident, the pool will cover the actual costs of repatriating the body to the homeland within one year from the date of the incident. The remaining amount will then be distributed to the legal heirs according to the inheritance certificate.
In all cases, the insured must be at least 18 years old and not exceed 70 years of age at the time of the incident.
Egypt, which is home to more than 100 million people, has an estimated 14 million citizens residing abroad, according to the Ministry of Emigration’s figures in 2024.
