CAIRO – 5 July 2025: President Abdel Fattah Sisi has approved an agreement for preparing a roadmap to reduce methane emissions in Egypt between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the United States Trade and Development Agency, with a grant of $959,006, pending ratification.

The official gazette published President Sisi's decision, No. 31 of 2025.

The agreement includes identifying current methane emissions in the petroleum sector, setting specific reduction targets and timelines for achieving them, and prioritizing two projects aimed at reducing methane emissions.

It also involves preparing proposals for legislation or internal policies to lower methane emissions in the petroleum sector, in line with the announced executive steps to contribute to reducing methane emissions in this field.

This initiative comes as part of President Sisi's announcement of Egypt's commitment to the Global Methane Pledge related to oil and gas.

Methane emissions worldwide play a crucial role in climate change, stemming from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Approximately 60% of these emissions are attributed to human activities, particularly from the energy sector and agriculture.

The Global Methane Pledge seeks to achieve a 30% reduction in global methane emissions by the year 2030.

Egypt joined the Global Methane Pledge in June 2022 and has subsequently updated its nationally determined contributions, aiming for a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from flaring associated gases in the oil and gas sector by 2030.

This reduction will primarily be achieved by capturing currently flared associated petroleum gas (APG) for use in oil production.
