CAIRO – 19 May 2025: Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, on Monday, at the the headquarters of the League of Arab States.

 

It is Aoun’s first official visit to the headquarters of the League of Arab States since assuming office.

 

Jamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, stated that the Secretary-General welcomed the President and briefed him on the decisions and outcomes of the recent Arab Summit held in Baghdad on May 17.

 

A key outcome was the decision to establish the Arab Fund to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in countries affected by crises. As part of this initiative, the Iraqi government pledged a $40 million donation, with $20 million specifically allocated to support reconstruction efforts in Lebanon.

 

The Secretary-General also congratulated Aoun on his recent visits to Arab countries, viewing them as a positive signal of a new chapter for Lebanon and a renewed relationship with its Arab neighbors.

 

The spokesperson added that the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Arab League’s full commitment to continue supporting Lebanon through all stages of its national journey. This includes efforts to reinforce the sovereignty of the Lebanese state, strengthen civil peace, and promote recovery, development, and prosperity for the Lebanese people.
