CAIRO – 7 May 2025: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi held talks with Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at the Prime Minister’s headquarters in Athens.
Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said President Sisi and the Greek Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting, followed by an expanded session of talks attended by delegations from both countries. Later, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis hosted a luncheon in honor of President Sisi.
The talks centered on bilateral relations and ways to forge closer cooperation, with a particular focus on enhancing collaboration within the East Mediterranean Gas Forum and the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus.
President Sisi and the Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis also reviewed regional developments, particularly the situation in the Gaza Strip.
They reiterated the imperative to resume the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the release of detainees and hostages, and to ensure the unfettered delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to the Strip to address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
They emphasized the necessity to implement the two-state solution as the only guarantee for achieving lasting peace and sustainable stability in the region, underscoring the need for concerted regional and international efforts to prevent further escalation or expansion of the conflict.
The talks also touched on developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
President Sisi welcomed ongoing efforts toward achieving de-escalation, expressing hope to capitalize on this positive atmosphere to resolve current disputes, thus pave the way for leveraging the region’s natural resources for the benefit of its peoples.
President Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis also discussed the situation in Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, as well as maritime security in the Red Sea and the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Following the talks, President Sisi and the Greek Prime Minister signed the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership between Egypt and Greece, and witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding in various fields, reflecting the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Both leaders also co-chaired the first meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council between Egypt and Greece.
The meeting reviewed the course of bilateral cooperation and work progress in the implementation of joint projects, primarily the electricity interconnection project between the two countries, which represents a key strategic step toward enhancing energy security in the region and the European Union.
It will be the first direct transmission of clean energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece.
The two sides also discussed cooperation in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, regulated migration, and the recruitment of seasonal labor.
During the meeting, President Sisi affirmed the essentiality of the Cooperation Council as a significant stride in bilateral relations, enhancing close engagement and coordination on issues of mutual interest.
The council also fosters bilateral economic and developmental cooperation, the exchange of expertise, and integration in vital sectors such as transport, environment, maritime security, education, manufacturing, and energy, as well as efforts to combat illegal migration and terrorism, based on Egypt's successful experience in these two areas.
