CAIRO – 2 May 2025: Khaled El-Balshy has won re-election for a second term as head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate with a comfortable victory in the midterm elections, gaining 55 percent of the votes.

Balshy secured a second term with 3,346 votes, followed by Abdel Mohsen Salama with 2,562 votes, then Sayed El-Eskandarani, who garnered 44 votes.
The elections saw eight candidates competing for the position of syndicate head, including also Talaat Hashem, Mohsen Hashem, Mohamed Badawy, Mohamed Maghraby, and Nora Rashed.
Turnout amounted to 6,051 out of 10,232 syndicate members, constituting 59.1 percent.
The syndicate on Friday witnessed the completion of the legal quorum for holding the general assembly in its fifth call, after the elections were postponed four consecutive times due to the lack of a quorum.
Besides the position of syndicate head, vote counting continues as dozens of syndicate members compete for six seats on the syndicate's board.
Balshy vowed to remain committed to all his promises, continuing on the path he started as he spoke to Extra News TV channel after the victory.
He emphasized that increasing the allowance is a right for all journalists, pledging to make the syndicate “a home for all journalists” and strive to improve their economic situation.
He thanked everyone who participated in ensuring the journalists' elections were conducted in such a respectable manner.
The syndicate holds elections every two years to elect a head, in addition to six board members, who serve for four-year terms.
The voting and counting process took place under full judicial supervision in 23 electoral committees.
