CAIRO – 24 April 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty announced that Egypt will participate at a high level in a summit hosted by Uganda and President Yoweri Museveni, scheduled for Friday morning in the city of Entebbe.
The summit aims to outline the participation and contributions of countries providing military and police personnel to the African mission set to be deployed in Somalia.
Minister Abdelatty stated during a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, that their discussions addressed developments in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the importance of preserving Somalia’s unity. He highlighted the need to empower the Somali government and its security institutions to maintain stability and combat terrorism effectively.
Abdelatty also conveyed Egypt’s strong commitment to participating in the African Union mission aimed at restoring security in Somalia and supporting the Somali government in its efforts.
In several occasions, Egypt has voiced unwavering support for the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia amidst tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over a deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland in January 2024, a self-declared state not recognized by Egypt.
The agreement, which allows Ethiopia potential access to the sea in exchange for recognizing Somaliland, has been vehemently opposed by Somalia as an infringement on its sovereign rights.
Both Somalia and Ethiopia have reached a deal to solve their conflict through an agreement mediated by Ankara in December 2024.
