CAIRO - 3 April 2025: In an age where social media can quickly amplify both facts and falsehoods, rumors spread online or within private groups have the potential to cause lasting damage to individuals' reputations.

As the Egyptian government works to establish clearer regulations for safe internet usage, it has become even more important for individuals to understand how to protect themselves.

The complaints office of the National Council for Women's (NCW) received a question from women via their hotline 15115, asking: "If someone spreads a rumor about me online or in a group, what should I do?"

If you find yourself the target of harmful rumors or false accusations online, or in a group, it is crucial to take immediate and informed action, according to steps advised by the NCW for adressing the issue calmly and strategically.

In response to this question, the NCW's Complaints Office advised:

1- First, document everything. Take a screenshot or save any message about you. You must have evidence that the rumor actually spread.

2- Report the group or the person who spread it. If the rumor spreads in a group or on social media, there are ways to report the content, and each platform provides a method for reporting it.

3- Contact the relevant authorities. If you need legal assistance, contact us immediately.

The National Council for Women's Complaints Office's 15115 hotline receives women's inquiries around the clock and offers them all forms of support, from legal advice to referrals for complaints requiring intervention.

The hotline provides answers to a range of questions submitted to the hotline and publishes them on its official page. It also receives inquiries on WhatsApp (01007525600) and messages from the Complaints Office page under the slogan "We Are With You."

The National Council for Women's Complaints Office provides protection and support for Egyptian women and contributes to creating a safe social and legislative environment for them to enjoy all their legal, constitutional, and social rights.

It is one of the Council's executive mechanisms and one of the most important links with women in Egyptian society who may be subjected to practices that constitute discrimination or violence against them, or constitute a violation of their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the law, or a breach of the principle of equality and equal opportunity, whether occurring in the public or private sphere.
