CAIRO – 17 February 2025: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides, on Monday, witnessed a signing ceremony of two agreements in energy sector, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Presidency.
President Christodoulides is visiting Cairo to attend the Egypt Energy Exhibition (EGYPS 2025).
As per the agreements, the natura gas in two fields of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone Cypriot (Aphrodite and Cronos) will be liquified in Egypt’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants to be then exported to Europe.
The first agreement was signed between the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry; and Eni. Meanwhile, the second agreement was inked between the two Ministries and London-based Chevron International Exploration and Production.
The signing of the agreements aligns with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum’s vision to transform Egypt into a regional hub for natural gas trading by leveraging the country's natural gas infrastructure to liquefy gas discoveries in the Mediterranean Sea, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum on Monday.
“Signing agreements with friendly and fraternally country of Cyprus and Cypriot President Nikos regarding developing the cooperation in Aphrodite and Cronos natural gas fields is evidence for developing and enhancing the relations [between the two countries],” President Sisi said in his speech at the EGYPS 2025 Conference.
For his Part, President Nikos said that signing the agreement is clearly an indication for strategic power relations. He added that the agreements are “game-changers” in the region and beyond to Europe, especially at this complex challenges times.
Before holding the ceremony, the two leaders held a bilateral discussion, followed by an expanded meeting with delegations from both countries.
Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, both directly and within the framework of the trilateral partnership with Greece. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the growing momentum in relations and emphasized their commitment to continued coordination across various sectors to meet the aspirations of their nations.
A key topic was energy cooperation, particularly in the production, liquefaction, and transportation of natural gas. This collaboration aims to benefit Egypt, Cyprus, and the broader European continent.
