CAIRO – 5 February 2025: World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Egypt, Dr Nima Saeed Abid said the Egyptian experience in vaccine production is ‘wonderful’, as it succeeded in getting rid of the Hepatitis C virus completely.
He added during the second forum on vaccines and medical preparations in Africa held in Cairo, that the secret of its success is that Egypt produced the treatment locally and therefore it was provided to all infected people and therefore many companies were able to produce the Hepatitis C drug at cheap prices.
He added that localizing vaccine production appeared obviously to be very important during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis due to the unfair distribution of vaccines, explaining that the World Health Organization has been calling for the localization of vaccines and medicines, especially in confronting pandemics and health emergencies.
He pointed out that the organization recommends that each country should have a strategy for vaccine production, and there must be cooperation at the African level, and there must be research, development and sharing of modern technologies.
Abid said that Egypt's experience in vaccine production is 120 years old, and therefore Egypt has all the capabilities that can produce and export vaccines.
He added that the African Center for Disease Control has developed a plan and strategy to produce 60% of vaccines in Africa by 2040, but there are many challenges, “however, with political will and funding, this can be achieved because we have the human capabilities and the factors that qualify for this are available.”
