CAIRO – 31 January 2025: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Friday congratulated Ahmed Al-Sharaa on his appointment as president of Syria during the transitional phase.

In his congratulatory message to Al-Sharaa on social media, Sisi expressed, “[I extend] my wishes for his success in achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people toward greater progress and prosperity.”

Al-Sharaa was appointed as head of state during the transitional phase on Wednesday. Spokesman for the Syria Military Operations Command, Hassan Abdel Ghani, stated that Al-Sharaa will represent the nation in international forums.

Ghani further stated that the new president has the authority to establish a temporary legislative council for the transitional phase, which will operate until a permanent constitution is enacted and implemented.

The command revealed several other resolutions, including the dissolution of the parliament, the disbanding of the former regime's army and its Baath Party, and the suspension of the constitution.

Al-Sharaa previously headed the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the pivotal role in the surprise offensive that resulted in the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime last year, a regime that had held power for several decades.

Following the fall of the Assad regime, Egypt has reiterated its support for the Syrian people, emphasizing the need for an inclusive political transition to maintain the stability and unity of the Syrian state.

Moreover, Egypt has highlighted the importance of preventing terrorist elements from establishing a foothold in Syria to ensure that the country does not become a threat to regional stability.
