CAIRO – 29 January 2025: Spokesman of the Military Operations Department in Syria announced on Wednesday that Ahmed Al Sharaa is now carrying out the duties of Syrian presidency, for the transitional phase.
Following a meeting for the Syrian factions, the spokesman for the Military Operations Department, Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani, said in a statement that al-Sharaa was authorized to form a temporary legislative council for the transitional phase, which will assume its duties until a permanent constitution for the country is approved.
He added that it was decided to cancel the 2012 constitution, suspend all exceptional laws, and dissolve the Parliament formed during the time of Bashar al-Assad's regime, and the committees emanating from it.
It was also announced the dissolution of the past regime's army and the rebuilding of the Syrian army on national foundations, the dissolution of all security agencies affiliated with the regime with their various branches and names, and all ‘militias it established’, and the formation of a new security institution to preserve the security of citizens.
All military factions, political and civil revolutionary bodies, were decided to be dissolved and merged the state institutions, according to the statement.
On December 8, The Syrian government crumbled and Bashar Al Assad, who clung to power through 14 years of civil war, fled Damascus, and announced later that he arrived in Russia.
