CAIRO – 23 May 2024: The Public Prosecution in Aswan has started investigating the discovery of a mummy inside a cage on a street in the Aswan governorate.

The prosecution has called in antiquities officials and inspectors to question them about the incident, identify the mummy's archaeological significance, and determine its historical period.

The investigation revealed that the mummy is in a deteriorated and incomplete condition with a detached head. It is believed to belong to the late period of an ancient Egyptian dynasty and is protected under Antiquities Protection Law No. 49 of 2016 and Ministerial Decree No. 117 of 1983 and its amendments.

The prosecution has decided to transfer the artifact to a museum store belonging to the Aswan and Nubia Antiquities Region.
