CAIRO - 20 May 2024: In light of the recent clashes and attacks that have affected a number of Egyptian students in Kyrgyzstan, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken swift action to ensure their safety and well-being.

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has instructed the Egyptian Embassy in Kazakhstan, which oversees non-resident representation in Kyrgyzstan, to immediately dispatch a consular mission to the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek. Located approximately 1200 kilometers from the Egyptian Embassy in Kazakhstan, Bishkek serves as the epicenter of the mission's efforts.

The primary objective of the consular mission is to ascertain the security and safety of Egyptian students, validate the protection of their rights and fair treatment, monitor relevant procedures with Kyrgyz authorities, and provide necessary support.

Upon arrival at Bishkek Airport, the consular mission proceeded directly to the "Tatan" building, housing 600 Egyptian students. There, they engaged in face-to-face meetings with the students, gauging their well-being and safety.

The consular mission actively coordinated with local authorities to secure adequate protection for the students, both within their residences and during their movements. They also requested regular police patrols to ensure comprehensive security.

The mission provided students with essential guidance and precautionary measures to safeguard their safety. They emphasized the importance of avoiding late-night outings, especially alone, and adhering to local police instructions.

Ambassador Abu Zeid confirmed that the consular mission met with four of the eight detained Egyptian students following the clashes. After verifying their safety, efforts are underway to secure the release of the remaining four students.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Consular Sector has directed the continuation of the Egyptian consular mission in Kyrgyzstan for several days. This extended presence will facilitate further interactions with Egyptian students and community leaders to ensure the stability of their situation. Additionally, ongoing communication with Kyrgyz officials at all levels will reinforce the commitment to safeguarding and supporting the Egyptian community.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges all Egyptian students residing in Kyrgyzstan to adhere to the prevailing rules and regulations, refrain from exposing themselves to risks or legal repercussions, and uphold the exemplary reputation of Egypt abroad.
