CAIRO – 14 May 2024: Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs Hamdy Loza received Monday U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello to discuss the updates of the armed conflict in the neighboring state, especially northern Darfur region.

The goal of the talks was concerting efforts to push for a ceasefire, and launch a political inclusive process that fulfills the ambitions of the Sudanese people. The meeting took place amid a fighting between the Sudanese army and the militia dubbed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Fasher city, the former's last stronghold in the region.

Last month, Ambassador Hossam Eissa, the head of the Sudan and South Sudan Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Perriello on mediation efforts targeting a ceasefire and resumption of negotiations in Sudan.

The ambassador stressed that the priority should be given to the protection of civilians and creating humanitarian corridors that would enhance the delivery of food and medical supplies.
