Egyptian president, Russian intelligence chief discuss Middle East tensions

CAIRO – 16 April 2024: President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi received Tuesday Head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin to discuss tensions in the Middle East, Gaza War, African crises, combating terrorism, developments in Ukraine and Afghanistan.

The meeting - attended by Chief of the General Intelligence Directorate Abbas Kamel – included an overview of the Egyptian mediation efforts aimed at a ceasefire in Gaza and supply of sufficient quantities of aid as a first step to achieve regional de-escalation.

 

President Sisi also stressed the salience of a fair and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian Cause by establishing a Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967 having as capital Eastern Jerusalem.

 

The two sides reiterated eagerness for continuous consultation and coordination between the two countries on various affairs in order to fulfill the joint interests.
