CAIRO – 18 February 2024: Egypt welcomed the Executive Council of the African Union’s endorsement of nominating Egyptian candidate, the Egyptologist and former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Khaled Anani, for the position of Director-General of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The AU’s approval was announced during the 44th session of the Executive Council meeting that was held in Addis Ababa on February 14 and 15.

“Egypt considered that this endorsement represents important support for the Egyptian candidacy, especially after its approval by the Ministerial Council of the League of Arab States last year, which ensures the support of the Arab and African blocs for the Egyptian candidate,” said the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday.
