7.9% decline in fire incidents in Egypt in 2023: CAPMAS

CAIRO – 17 February 2024: Egypt witnessed a decline in fire incidents nationwide in 2023, announced the state-owned Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on Saturday.

 

The number of fire incidents nationwide decreased to 45,435 incidents in 2023, compared to 49,341 incidents in 2022, a decrease of 7.9%, CAPMAS added.

 

According to the criminal case, accidental fire comes first among fire incidents, with 10,137 incidents (22.3%) followed by fire due to negligence, with 4,991 incidents (11%) over the year 2023.

 

Most causes of fire are industrial fires (cigarette butts, matches, incendiary material, sparklers, etc.), with a number of 14,174 incidents (representing 31.2%) and electrical short circuits or frictional sparks, with a number of 8,346 incidents (representing 18.4%) of the total causes of fire.

 

Residential buildings came first in the number of fire incidents with 17,804 incidents (39.2%), followed by garbage and waste with 17,106 incidents (37.6%) of the total fire incidents.

 

At the governorate level, Cairo Governorate comes first in terms of fire incidents, with 5,993 incidents (13.2%), followed by Giza Governorate, with 3,925 incidents (8.6%) and North Sinai Governorate, with 137 incidents (0.3%) of the total fire incidents.
