Egypt’s forces arrest 8 people for forging election endorsement forms

CAIRO – 9 October 2023: Eight people were arrested in the governorates of Alexandria, Giza, Fayoum, and Suez for forging endorsement forms for the favor of ‘one of the potential candidates’ for the 2024 presidential elections.

According to a security source, the arrested people were putting different signatures on a circulated form, to claim that they were issued by the authorized registration offices.

A total of 596 copies of the ‘empty forged endorsement forms’ were found in their possession, and it was also possible to identify and arrest the owner of the ‘printing house’ that printed the forged the forms.

Legal measures were taken against the arrested people, and they were presented to the Public Prosecution.

In another statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, a security source stated that, ‘in light of what is observed by some supporters of one of the potential candidates for the presidential elections, calling for actions that violate the law and movements that disturb security, the Ministry of Interior confirms that it will take all legal measures decisively against those who violate the legal controls established by the National Elections Authority or Any violations that disturb public security.’

Three potential candidates have submitted their papers so far to the National Election Authority; President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, President of the Egyptian Democratic Social Party Farid Zahran and Leader of Al Wafd Party Abdel Sanad Yamama.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi secured endorsements from 424 parliament members and 1.13 million citizens at notary offices to run in the upcoming presidential elections.

The primary approval or rejection of potential candidates will be announced by the NEA on October 16 and 17, while the final list will be out on November 9, taking into consideration that the submission will close on October 14.

The documents required are a copy of the national ID; birth certificate; education certificate; criminal record; military service status certificate for males; financial statement; medical test results; and at least 20 nominations from members of the House of Representatives or 25,000 nominations from citizens issued through the Registry.

The voting will take place abroad on December 1-3, and domestically on December 10-12, while the result will be announced on December 18.
