CAIRO – 19 July 2017: A high level delegation from the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) unit of the United Nations praised on Wednesday the security measures practiced at the arrival and departure terminals in building No. 2 at Cairo International Airport.

The delegation checked the methods of detecting smuggled money and forged passports, as well as ways to deal with them in the criminal laboratories at the airport, security sources told Egypt Today.

The delegation started its inspection tour of the airport by examining the travel halls. They will review procedures for the registration of passengers, luggage inspection, security procedures and passenger inspection procedures, security sources told Egypt Today.

The delegation includes six aviation experts, the sources added

According to the sources, the delegation will also examine the security procedures at Gate 35, which is for the entry of trucks and goods to Cairo International Airport.

Earlier, a number of European airlines banned flights to Egypt and Sharm El-Sheikh over security concerns following an October 2015 crash of a Russian aircraft in the Sinai that resulted in the death of all 224 people on board.

Cairo International Airport’s Terminal 2 was inaugurated in 1986, serving primarily European, Gulf and East Asian airlines. The terminal was closed in April 2010 for complete renovation, with the project starting in 2012. The architecture of the original building limited the opportunities for further expansion, prompting a major structural overhaul at an estimated cost of $400 million. This was supported by a $387 million loan from the World Bank.
