Egyptian President, Bohra Sultan inaugurate Sayyeda Nafisa Mosque in Old Cairo after renovation

CAIRO – 8 August 2023: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, accompanied by Sultan of India’s Bohra Cult Mufaddal Saifuddin, inaugurated Tuesday Sayyeda Nafisa Mosque in Old Cairo after renovation, highlighting that Sayeda Zeinab Mosque, whose renovation is underway, would be inaugurated soon.

The president noted that such renovations are within the government's plan to rehabilitate Historic Cairo, expressing appreciation for the Bohra in contributing to the works. He also shed light on the fact that members of the cult live peacefully and harmoniously among Egyptians.

 

The revamping of Historic Cairo includes the elimination of slums so as 110 buildings that were at the risk of collapse have been demolished in Arab Al Yasar, disbursing compensations to dwellers.

 

President Sisi commented that what had been happening in the area was similar to the makeover that took place in Cairo Citadel Aqueduct, also located in Historic Cairo, saying, "we changed the harsh reality there; we're doing the same here."

 

Egypt’s authorities started in April 2022 maintenance and renovation works at the historical and sacred Al Sayeda Zainab Mosque as per President Abdel Fattah al Sisi directions to renovate historical mosques’ shrines, including the interior halls of, and architectural decorations.

The works include the buildings around the mosque and the whole neighborhood. Moreover, all shop signs in the zone are expected to be unified, as the street will be developed to be similar to the touristic Khan Al-Khalil Street.

Al-Sayeda Zainab Mosque is one of the most important and historic mosques in Cairo. It was named in an honor to Al Sayeda Zaynab bint Ali, one of the daughters of Imam Ali, fourth Caliph, and husband of Fatimah, daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
