CAIRO – 26 July 2023: Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid has published an article on the MFA Blog in response to a recent Foreign Policy’s article on the Arab Spring, which he described as “inciting against Egypt.”

The Foreign Policy’s article dated 2 July, 2023, came under the title “Lessons for the Next Arab Spring.” The article claims that former US President Barack Obama “gave the Egyptian military what amounted to a green light to overthrow the country’s first-ever democratically elected government.”

The article added “if and when a second spring comes, US officials will have to re-learn them (the lessons of the first Arab Spring) all over again.

In response, Abu Zeid said Egypt believes that the United States took the right decision by recognizing the 30th of June, 2013 events, which overthrew Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated President Mohamed Morsi, as a popular uprising.

“We believe that our partners have stood on the right side of history by supporting the popular will of millions of Egyptians, who demonstrated the resilience and power to preserve their country, identity and nationhood at all costs,” Abu Zeid stated in his article.

Abu Zeid affirmed that the US has recognized the will of the Egyptian people who wrote history “to restore their democracy, a principle that is enshrined in the American constitution.”

“Thus, by supporting the will of the Egyptian people, the United States’ Administration has ensured that the will of the Egyptian people would ultimately prevail,” he added.

Abu Zeid noted that the Foreign Policy Magazine has refused to publish the Egyptian response, despite repeated attempts to do so.

The article was published only two days after the 10th anniversary of the 30 June Revolution, which ended the ruling of the Muslim Brotherhood group a year following their assumption of power.

Millions of Egyptians rushed to streets, calling for President Morsi to step down in a popular uprising that was recognized worldwide.
