CAIRO - 27 June 2023: High-level officials at the European Commission have expressed their profound appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role as a guarantor of stability in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region.

They emphasized the importance of cooperation with Egypt as a "close neighbor and key partner" within the framework of the European Neighborhood Policy, which holds special significance for the Union. It was noted that the partnership between Egypt and the European Union has been in place for nearly twenty years.

Officials from the European Commission clarified that the European Union views Egypt as an extremely important strategic partner that requires support, assistance, and consultation on all matters.

These statements were made during a series of meetings held by European Commission officials responsible for partnership with the South and Egypt, with a visiting Egyptian press delegation in Brussels. The purpose of these meetings was to underscore the significance of the Egyptian media's role in enhancing partnership and cooperation between both sides.

The European Commission officials stated that the new document outlining priorities for the partnership between Egypt and the European Union was adopted last year and will remain in effect until 2027.

They further emphasized that Egypt is undoubtedly a crucial strategic partner for the European Union, not only as a gateway to Africa but also due to its significant role in the Middle East and the Arab Gulf. The coordination between both parties regarding regional stability, migration, energy, and the economy was also highlighted. In this regard, the ongoing discussions and continuous meetings between Egyptian authorities and European Commission officials were deemed important.

The European Commission officials presented the priorities of the partnership between Egypt and the European Union, which encompass political and economic aspects, as well as addressing instability, terrorism, migration, and foreign policy. Egypt was described as a "key player" in the entire region. It was noted that Egypt is one of the few countries that do not seek financial assistance but instead requests technical expertise and technology from the European Union. The cooperation between both sides in the field of trade was praised, particularly with the noticeable increase in the volume of trade.

The European Commission officials responsible for neighborhood policies, partnerships, and trade with Mediterranean countries, with Egypt at the forefront, highlighted their efforts to increase investments in Egypt. The European Union also provides loans to support investments, especially in the areas of energy, clean transportation, climate, the environment, and water. It was mentioned that €100 million was allocated last year to support Egypt in addressing the food crisis resulting from the conflict in Ukraine, along with an additional €50 million to support projects related to the "Decent Life" initiative.

The European Commission officials also emphasized their support for various programs related to women, trade, industry, and education in Egypt. They highlighted cooperation with Egypt in new and renewable energy projects, as well as water projects in the Yellow Mountain and the Suez Gulf, among others. Additionally, they expressed support for projects related to the clean economy, green economy, climate, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

This recognition from the European Commission highlights Egypt's role as a strategic partner and its contributions to regional stability and cooperation. The partnership between Egypt and the European Union is expected to further strengthen, promoting mutual benefits and advancing various areas of collaboration.
