CAIRO – 12 June 2023: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, discussing the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Minister Shoukry expressed deep concern about the continuing escalation of violence, the Israeli incursions into the West Bank, which resulted in casualties and injuries, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid in a statement.
Shoukry reviewed efforts made by Egypt during the past period to calm the situation, besides reviewing the Egyptian participation in the meetings of the Aqaba/Sharm El-Sheikh and the Munich formula.
Shoukry stressed the need to work on implementing the understandings related to these meetings in a way that reduces tension.
He also called for the need for concerted regional and international efforts, and at the level of the United Nations, in order to stop the continuous escalation in the occupied territories, and to create a new climate supportive of reviving the peace process.
Wennesland expressed his appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in the peace process, looking forward to continuing coordination with Egypt in order to break the current stalemate in the peace process, stop the violence between Palestinians and Israelis, and restore hope for a final, comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian cause.
