CAIRO – 9 June 2023: Egypt’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the efforts made by the Joint 6+6 Libyan Committee to prepare the electoral law in a statement issued on Thursday.

The ministry urged the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State to continue their role within the committee in accordance with their powers under the Skhirat agreement to fulfill required frameworks for running elections.

The ministry urged the HoR and the HCS to continue efforts to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections in parallel at the earliest opportunity in order to fulfill people’s aspirations.

Egypt also called for parties concerned with the Libyan crisis to support the efforts made by the HoR and the HCS in this regard in line with the principle of the Libyan ownership of the solution.

This aims at achieving the desired goal of restoring stability in sisterly Libya and fulfill people’s aspirations, the Egyptian ministry added.

The ministry’s statement came a few days after the joint committee, formed in March to formulate legislation to regulate elections, conducted its round of talks in Morocco.

During the talks, the committee agreed on reaching an agreement on presidential and legislative electoral laws with speakers of the HoR and the HCS scheduled to sign it shortly.

In May Egypt also hailed the efforts exerted by the 6+6 committee to finalize the legal framework needed to facilitate holding the presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya as soon as possible.

Egypt has repeatedly affirmed the need to hold the long-delayed elections in Libya to restore security and stability. The elections were scheduled for December 2021.
