CAIRO - 5 June 2023: The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population confirmed the provision of drug treatment to 3,000 patients as part of the "early detection and treatment of liver cancer" initiative, noting that all medical examinations are free of charge.
 
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, indicated that those suspected of having a cancerous tumor are referred to referral treatment centers to conduct confirmatory examinations, and to start receiving the necessary treatment according to the case if it is proven that they have liver tumors.
 
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, confirmed that urtlasound examination services and tumor analyzes are provided periodically every 4 months for patients with cirrhosis, through 65 hepatitis units located within the hospitals of the Ministry of Health and university hospitals.
 
He revealed the results of the work of the National Committee for Combating Hepatitis Viruses since the start of the program in 2019, through which 116,980 patients with liver cirrhosis are followed up, stressing the continuation of updates in treatment protocols during the years 2022 and 2023, and the new medicines that have been added.
 
He revealed the efforts of the Ministry of Health and the National Committee for Combating Hepatitis Viruses in adding immunotherapy drugs to treat liver cancer, which have been provided to 20 patients so far, and work is underway to add new tests within accurate diagnostic protocols to detect cancerous tumors.
 
Dr. Wael Abdel Razek, Deputy Executive Director of the National Committee for Combating Hepatitis Viruses, added that medicines are dispensed to patients with "liver cancer" during their first visit after referring them for evaluation through 22 multidisciplinary clinics within the hepatitis treatment units that include specialties (liver, tumors, interventional radiology, Surgery). These units assess the condition and determine the best treatment, whether medical or surgical.
 
Abdel Razek pointed out the necessity of urging and educating patients with cirrhosis of the liver who frequent the hepatitis virus units, with periodic follow-up so as not to exacerbate the disease, whatever the cause of cirrhosis, as urtlasound examination services and tumor analyzes are provided periodically and free of charge every 4 months for patients with cirrhosis of the liver from Within 65 units of hepatitis viruses.
 
Dr. Muhammad Abdullah, the medical coordinator of the National Committee for Combating Hepatitis Viruses, added that patients are received with hepatitis virus units, their health status is evaluated, their medical reports are reviewed, and treatment is started periodically for free according to the patient’s health condition, which contributes to saving patients’ lives and speeding receive treatment.
 
He said that the hepatitis virus units work seven days a week except Friday from (9 am to 12 noon), and citizens' inquiries are received on the hotline 15335.
