CAIRO – 24 May 2023:  Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit stressed that the AL is backing all efforts that would help reach a national reconciliation and push forward the political process in Libya in order to maintain the country's unity and realize security and stability.

This will also help end the foreign military presence in Libya, he said.

Abul Gheit made the remarks during a meeting with Deputy Chairman of Libya's Presidential Council, Abdullah Al Lafi.

The two sides exchanged views on the latest developments in Libya.

Abul Gheit welcomed Al Lafi's statements on the council's reliance on the role of the AL in supporting national reconciliation in order to hold the national elections and restore stability, Spokesman for the AL Chief Gamal Roshdi said.

Al Lafi reviewed during the meeting the latest political developments in Libya and the council's efforts to reach the national reconciliation.

The meeting came a day after the Libyan Joint Committee 6+6, formed jointly by Libya's High Council and House of Representatives for the preparation of electoral laws affirmed the need to form a unified government that prepares the ground for holding elections.

Egypt and the Arab and world countries have highlighted the necessity for holding elections in Libya, which was scheduled to be held in December 2021, in order for Libya to restore its stability and end foreign interference.

MENA contributed to the reporting.
