CAIRO – 22 May 2023: Egypt’s Criminal Court sentenced Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders Mohamed Badie, Mohamed el-Beltagy, Mahmoud Ezzat, Amr Zaki, Osama Yassin, Essam Abdel Majid, and Muhammad Abdel Maqsoud, to death penalty, in Case No. 72 of 2021.

The case will be referred to the Mufti to take his legal opinion. The court set a session for September 20 to announce final verdict.

During previous sessions, Egypt’s Public Prosecution Office presented an official report from the Public Transport Authority regarding the damages reported at the locations where violence acts took place including, stations on Al-Nasr Street.

The defendants in the case are: Mohamed Badie, Mahmoud Ezzat, Mohamed el-Beltagy, Amr Zaki, Osama Yassin, Safwat Hegazy, Asim Abdel Majid, Muhamad Afif, and others.

Article 12 of the Anti-Terrorism Law defines the penalty for establishing or managing a terrorist group, and when does this crime reach the death penalty, and stipulates that “Whoever establishes, organizes, or manages a terrorist group, or assumes leadership in it, shall be punished with death or life imprisonment.”
