CAIRO – 6 May 2023: The Egyptian House of Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) passed a law regulating the possession of dangerous animals and dogs and allowing them to be handed over to the state.

 

The law was passed after a young bank manager, who is a husband of a broadcaster, died after his neighbor’s dangerous dog, Pit Bull, attacked him.

 

As per the new law, owners who own unlicensed dangerous animalsshall hand them over to the General Authority for Veterinary Services within a month from the date of the law.

 

The law also set conditions for all dealings with dangerous animals, selling, importing, exporting, exchanging, borrowing, displaying or transferring them, or transferring their possession or transferring them from one place to another.

 

Whoever violates the provisions of the law shall be punished with a fine of not less than 10,000 EGP and not more than 500,000 EGP.

 

The same penalty shall apply to anyone who made a dog jump on, assaulted, traced a passer-by, even if no harm resulted from that.

 

 

According to the law, anyone who assaults another by using a dangerous animal or a dog without intending to kill him but it led to death shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than 10 years. In case, the assault was premeditated, the penalty shall be life imprisonment or temporary hard labor for a period of no less than 15 years and no more than 20 years.
