CAIRO – 2 May 2023: Egypt’s General Coordinator of the National Dialogue Diaa Rashwan said, Tuesday that he has ‘reassurances’ that case number 173 of 2014 related to NGOs, in which 43 Egyptian and foreign organizations were being accused, will be solved completely very soon.

He added in televised statements that solving of this case which sparked a lot of controversial debates, will take place in parallel with the releases of prominent politicians, “and that there is complete seriousness in releasing all of them soon, which is one of the major results of the national dialogue.”

He said that ‘pretrial detention’ is a huge problem, and that “as constitution stated that torture is a punishment that does not lapse by statute of limitations, it stated very sophisticated texts for pretrial detention”.

He noted that according to the Egyptian constitution, whoever was in pretrial detention should be compensated if acquitted.

He also stressed that pretrial detention will be one of the most important outputs of the national dialogue.

The opening session of the National Dialogue is set to kick off on Wednesday with a broad-based and effective participation by representatives of all syndicates, political forces and NGOs.

The country’s youth will be the main driver of the National Dialogue, while over 100 topics are set to be discussed during its various sessions.

The opening session is set to be open to all Egyptian, Arab and foreign media outlets, while several sessions will be broadcast live.

At the end of each day of the National Dialogue, a statement will be released about what happened in its sessions.

The dialogue, called by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, is set to include all segments of the society and will be attended by a large number of the country’s leading public figures and intellectuals.
